The martyrs who laid down their lives in the struggle for the proletariat, for the democratic revolution, for the socialist revolution and ultimately for communism stand as shining examples of communist fighting spirit, of the selfless spirit that every communist must embody in order to serve the people and the revolution. Chairman Mao reminds us in his article Serve the People that every sacrifice in the service of the people deserves to be remembered. Dying for the people is as heavy as a mountain, while death in the service of reaction is as light as a feather. The heroic struggle of the People’s War in Turkey and its martyrs reminds and inspires us to live and, if necessary, die for the proletariat and the people.
The fight for communism always involves the risk of dying in battle. Both communists and the masses must understand this. But we must not become afraid of this, because that would mean that we would become afraid of the reaction, afraid of the struggle, passive and unable to continue the fight. By honouring the martyrs, we remind ourselves that death is not the end of the struggle, that even after death the martyrs serve as examples and inspiration for the struggle to continue. We also see great examples of how far communists can and must go in their duty to the revolution, the proletariat and the people.
